Fraud SMS in our name with a request for a callback

Fraudulent text messages are currently being sent in our name, which refer to a "transfer from your account" or the "authorisation of a loan". In order to tempt you to act quickly, large sums of money are mentioned and you are asked to call back if these activities are not intended by you.

This is a scam. In reality, the fraudsters are trying to trick you into installing malware on your device under the pretext of possible fraudulent activity on your account. In fact, it is not possible to make a transfer or to apply for a loan in your internet banking without your personal authorisation.

How does this scam work?

If you call the number given, you will be forwarded to fraudsters pretending to be employees of Erste Bank & Sparkassen. During the call, the criminals ask for your personal details and claim that your name is on a list of potential fraud victims.

The criminals also ask for your smartphone operating system (Android or iOS) and then send another text message with a link that leads to a supposed "anti-virus app".

In reality, however, something else happens:

  • The alleged transfer or loan application does not exist. A look at your account is enough to be sure.

  • Your device is not affected by malware as claimed.

  • However, the supposed "anti-virus app" is actually malware designed to give the criminals access to your smartphone - and subsequently to your internet banking.

How can you protect yourself from this scam?

  • Please ignore this text message and do not call back the number provided

  • Do not disclose any personal information

  • Never give strangers access to your computer/smartphone
