Taking responsibility for the future.
May 1825. A sum of 100 guilders is deposited at the “Steyermärkische Spar-Casse”. The money is intended to support poor but hard-working schoolchildren on their journey.
What began on a small scale 200 years ago is now practised daily at the Steiermärkische Sparkasse. We take responsibility for society and invest a part of our economic profits in projects that benefit the public. This is how we bring the Sparkasse concept to life.
Our goal: A good, diverse future that is worth living.
Our Corporate Social Responsibility is built on 5 pillars:
Social Commitment
We believe in people, in their strengths and their dreams. However, we also know that not everyone has the same opportunities in life to turn their dreams into reality. Social barriers often block the path to a self-determined future. In collaboration with charitable and social institutions, we support and encourage people to overcome these hurdles.
Financial Literacy
A stable financial situation is essential for satisfaction, health, and success. In order to be financially healthy, it is necessary to have an overview of the money available and to use it wisely. This can be very complex. It requires knowledge and support. And we offer both. We talk to people about money in an easily accessible way and help them get started in their financial lives.
Education and Innovation
The world has changed radically since we were first founded. We have seen the light, landed on the moon and learned how to surf digitally. We owe all of this to clever minds. Strengthening this innovative spirit is essential for a bright future. That is why we support young talents as well as renowned research institutions.
Art and Culture
Be it the Graz Opera, the Graz Music Society or La Strada: our founding principles resonate, dance and resound everywhere. For almost 200 years, we have been committed to supporting the local arts and cultural landscape. We promote classical arts as well as young projects and are an inspiring partner for artists and event organizers alike.
Environment
We recognized the value of our environment long before the climate crisis became the most burning issue of our time. Through Sparkasse initiatives, the Augarten park in Graz and the Leechwald forest, for example, have been preserved as local recreational areas. Furthermore, we have been a partner to local winegrowers since the time of the phylloxera infestation. We support them on the path to sustainable wine growing and agriculture and contribute to the preservation of the Styrian wine tradition by operating the Winzerhaus Kogelberg, for instance. We bundle these and other measures for biodiversity, environmental protection and resource conservation in our ambitious sustainability strategy #glaubanmorgen (#believeintomorrow).
The grants are awarded by Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse. It is the main owner of Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG and supports multifaceted projects in Styria and Southeastern Europe with part of the dividend payments.

Who we are
The Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse and its tasks
In 1825, the Steiermärkische Sparkasse is first founded as a savings bank (Vereinssparkasse). Everyone, regardless of origin, profession or gender, should have access to banking. The overriding goal is “not only to maintain the quality of life in our region, but to ensure it is sustainable and future-proof”.
In the early 1990s, savings banks are provided the opportunity to transfer their banking operations to a public limited company. Since then, the operational banking business has been run by Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG. The former Steiermärkische Sparkasse becomes the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse. Its tasks are to maintain this shareholding and develop the founding principle in keeping with the times.
Why we are a majority shareholder
The Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse is the main owner of the Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG and currently holds around 74% of its shares. The Erste Bank der österreichischen Sparkassen AG (Erste Bank Österreich) holds around 25% and one share. Our employees currently hold around 1% of the shares. Additionally, the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse holds shares in Erste Group AG, the leading institution in the savings bank sector, in line with the core shareholder strategy of the savings banks. The Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse sees itself as an autonomous legal entity that is not bound by the interests of external shareholders.
The Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse and its governing bodies
The Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse is an organisation similar to a foundation. Its governing bodies ensure that it can perform its tasks as the guardian of the founding principle to the best of its ability. These governing bodies are:
The General Assembly
of the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse’s association. It is comprised of all members of the Sparkasse Association. These members are nominated by the association and represent a cross-section of the population — entrepreneurs, university staff and representatives of public life. The general assembly consists of at least 30 and at most 150 members. These are in turn represented by the chairperson and two deputies.
The Savings Bank Advisory Board (Sparkassenrat)
of the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse fulfils tasks similar to those of a stock company’s advisory board. Members are elected by the general assembly. Four of these members are from the group of eligible employee representatives from the Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG supervisory board. The savings bank advisory board appoints the executive board of the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse and controls its actions. The board consists of 11 members, including a chairperson and two deputies. Meetings are held four times a year.
The Executive Committee
of the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse. According to the statutes, it consists of two to four members and is appointed by the Savings Bank Advisory Board for a maximum of five years. The executive committee meets at least four times a year and reports business activities to the savings bank council.
The Advisory Board
consists of representatives from the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse’s executive committee and the savings bank advisory board, as well as representatives from the Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG’s executive committee. The advisory board decides on all funding applications that exceed the authority of the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse's executive committee.
A Time-Lapse of Responsibility
The History of our Social Commitment
Since 1825, Steiermärkische Sparkasse and Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse have focused on a genuine commitment to people and the region in addition to the actual banking business. Join us on a journey marking the milestones in our CSR history.
1825
It all begins with 100 Guilders
The “Steyermärkische Spar-Casse” is founded as an ownerless savings back. One of its founding fathers, Franz de Paula Count von Hartig, gives the cashier a sum of 100 guilders. The money is intended to benefit poor but hard-working schoolchildren. The Count von Hartig thus lays the foundation for the social commitment that continues to this day.
1834
Standing by the people
A devastating fire in Premstätten destroys the belongings of many people. The statutes of Steiermärkische Sparkasse at the time did not provide for a donation. Nevertheless, the bank supports the people affected with 1,000 guilders, laying the foundation for further donations.
1851
Support in troubled times
In the middle of the 19th century, southern Austria is hit by floods. Steiermärkische Sparkasse continues its fundraising activities and supports those affected with 11,000 guilders. Part of the money goes to people in Carinthia and Carniola (Krain).
1853
In the spirit of Hartig
Count von Hartig's wish to support children is still fulfilled three decades after its establishment. Steiermärkische Sparkasse donates funding for five childcare places in the Seiler'sches Haus, where deaf children are taught and cared for.
1878
A monument commemorating the Styrian Prince
The bond with Styria is once again clearly expressed. The Erzherzog-Johann-Brunnen (Archduke Johann Fountain) is inaugurated in Graz's main square. Steiermärkische Sparkasse provided 10,000 guilders for its construction.
1885
A truly regal concert hall
The highlight of the newly constructed Steiermärkische Sparkasse building is the Stephaniensaal, named after Crown Princess Stephanie, which is formally unveiled in 1885. The Musikverein für Steiermark (Styrian music society), also closely associated with Steiermärkische Sparkasse, makes its artistic home in this magnificent concert hall.
1895
Haus der Barmherzigkeit (House of Compassion)
To mark the upcoming anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph, Steiermärkische Sparkasse donates 300,000 guilders to enable the construction of a hospital for the terminally ill. From then on, terminally ill, destitute people are cared for in the Haus der Barmherzigkeit - regardless of age, gender, origin, or religion.
1896
A park for everyone
The Steiermärkische Sparkasse acquires the grounds of today's Augarten in Graz on the condition that the area is “fundamentally excluded from development for all time”. The area is converted into a park and serves as a recreational area for everyone who lives in the city.
1899
A generous gift
The Graz Municipal Theatre, now the Opera Graz, where operas and circuses were once performed on wooden boards, is built. Steiermärkische Sparkasse covers the costs of construction and gifts the opera house to the city. A loyal partnership begins.
1907
The green lungs of Graz
Steiermärkische Sparkasse acquires the Leechwald forest in Graz to protect it from development. In addition to the Augarten park, the city's population now has a second local recreation area - affectionately known as the “Paradise of Graz”.
1908
Engagement on all levels
1908 is a special year for Steiermärkische Sparkasse's social commitment: a reserve fund for construction and residential buildings is set up to guarantee low-interest rates for poorer members of the population. There is also a focus on child welfare — the Central Office for Child Protection and Youth Welfare, the Association for the Care of the Poor and Children’s Welfare and the Anna Children’s Hospital Association, are supported, among others.
1924
Sparkasse and wine
Steiermärkische Sparkasse had already made a name for itself as the “saviour of Styrian vineyards” during the phylloxera invasion of 1890. In 1924, it even acquired its own vineyard, the “Koglhof” winery. In the following decades, the winery became a tavern and later one of the top restaurants in southern Styria, the Winzerhaus Kogelberg.
1962
A Sparkasse house in the Children’s Village (Kinderdorf)
Accompanying young people on their journey is still important a century and a half after the bank was first founded. Steiermärkische Sparkasse provides funding for the construction of the Nussbaum Haus (Nussbaum House) in the SOS Children’s Village in Stübing. The building is handed over as part of the official opening of the children's village in April 1962.
1966
Artistic youths
The “Gallery of Youth” exhibition series supported by Steiermärkische Sparkasse provides a stage for the creative work of Styrian schoolchildren. Drawings and artworks from all Styrian districts are exhibited.
1978
A sparkling anniversary present
The “Weltspartags-Schilling” (World Savings Day Shilling), introduced in 1973, is regularly used to finance charitable projects. In 1978, the money is used to restore the Stadtparkbrunnen (city park fountain) - an anniversary gift celebrating the 850th birthday of the city of Graz.
1991
The Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse is born
All banking operations are transferred to a public limited company. From then on, the operational banking business is conducted by the Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG. The former Steiermärkische Sparkasse becomes the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse.
2004
The beginning of an important partnership
Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse becomes a partner of the Hospizverein Steiermark, which accompanies people in difficult, often final phases of life. Support is not only provided by way of funding: 23 employees are trained hospice companions and seven are volunteers.

The Founding Principle and the Future
An interview with Eva Heigl and Gerhard Fabisch
How is the founding principle of 1825 kept alive today? Is the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse a modern patron of the arts? What role does it play in creating a future worth living?
Eva Heigl, Chairwoman of the Management Board of Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse, and Gerhard Fabisch, Chairman of the Management Board of Steiermärkische Sparkasse, provide the answers.
Looking back from the past to the present, the idea of a savings bank is now almost 200 years old in Styria. What is left of that idea today?
Eva Heigl: Our mission is as relevant today as it was then. Our goal is still to offer people in our region autonomy and financial independence so that they can make better use of their opportunities in life. This form of sustainability in the founding principle of the savings banks has remained unchanged for generations and will continue to do so in the present and the future. As an owner with a long-term perspective and a focus on stability, we support and promote Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG as an operating unit so that it can implement these goals in its daily business in the best possible way.
If, like you, one is responsible not only for long-term strategic considerations, but also for decisions affecting day-to-day business: Where is the Sparkasse concept reflected in your daily thoughts and actions?
Gerhard Fabisch: It is often a balancing act to decide in favour of business necessities such as efficiency or profitability in day-to-day operations while still keeping the fundamental values of Steiermärkische Sparkasse in mind. Because even the sustainable and supposedly selfless goals of the founding concept require successful operational activities in order to be implemented. As Steiermärkische Sparkasse, we are concerned with all the people in our regions. This in turn means that there are both promising and challenging phases and subject areas. As Steiermärkische Sparkasse, we embody our founding principle — to be a bank for everyone.
In accordance with its certificate of incorporation, Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse fulfils the task of accompanying the people of Styria on their journey from the present to the future. In doing so, the self-determination and responsibility of each individual also needs to be taken into account. How does this happen?
Eva Heigl: The diverse charitable projects that we support provide assistance for self-development in numerous areas. This is what distinguishes our activities from patronage, which is characterized by benevolent donations based on goodwill. As Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse, we want to provide start-up financing and thus secure the basis for the further economic progress of projects. This is why, for example, financial education is such an important topic for us not only in Styria, but also in our associated countries in Southeastern Europe. In Southeastern Europe in particular, we want to inspire the younger generation to stay in the country and build and expand their livelihoods there. The projects we promote should actively support this.
Gerhard Fabisch: We also secure these goals through a responsible and long-term oriented dividend policy. Rather than exhausting this, we prefer to focus on security and stability to ensure that we can fulfil all obligations to our customers and society even in times of economic challenge.
Independence and responsibility have always determined the path of Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG as an operating company. How do you feel about an owner like Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse?
Gerhard Fabisch: Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse is a responsible and long-term oriented owner that does not allow itself to be dazzled by hasty quarterly thinking. This does not mean that we ignore current developments, but we are not concerned with looking at every promising temptation on the capital market. Our owner relies heavily on stable value growth. In order to safeguard this and to be able to confidently navigate difficult economic times, we deliberately avoid erratic upward and downward developments.
Now let's consider this from a different perspective. What possibilities does Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse have to influence Steiermärkische Sparkasse itself? How much control and coordination actually takes place?
Eva Heigl: On the one hand, Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse decides on the distribution of dividends and helps to build up capital through responsible and long-term thinking so that Steiermärkische Sparkasse can take advantage of its opportunities, like those abroad, for instance. On the other hand, Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse elects the members of the Supervisory Board of Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG, whereby we indirectly appoint the members of the Executive Committee of the public limited company. In addition, as Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse, we set the long-term course of the company and see ourselves as part of the Sparkassengruppe (savings bank group). The decision in favour of this long-term strategic orientation and the associated cross-guarantee system of the Sparkassen (savings banks) has had a decisive influence on the development of Steiermärkische Sparkasse.
Steiermärkische Sparkasse has always placed people at the centre of its thoughts and actions. How does Steiermärkische Sparkasse Group succeed in communicating the founding idea to its more than 3,180 employees in Styria and its extended home market in the Western Balkans?
Gerhard Fabisch: There are several anchors here that sustainably safeguard our mission through the formulation of annual plans, employee appraisals and, of course, job descriptions. It goes without saying that integrity, sustainability, and the benefits of what we do for people must be considered in our planning. Furthermore, our employees are actively involved in many of our charitable activities. I would like to highlight Zweite Sparkasse (the bank of second chances) as a good example of this. It's important to communicate these topics via our intranet and bring them to life, and of course to exemplify the values of Steiermärkische Sparkasse itself by acting as a role model and through our treatment of employees. After all, it is the little building blocks in our decisions affecting shareholders, customers, and employees that make our values tangible too.
Now, let us discuss the value framework that Is managed and protected by Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse. How do you view yourself in your dual role? You yourself are also part of the executive committee.
Gerhard Fabisch: When you have been taking responsibility the way Steiermärkische Sparkasse has and define the self-image as we did almost 200 years ago, then there is only one path for both the operational unit and Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse as the owner. We often practice patience, while the capital market is usually impatient. We take smaller risks; however, this ensures that we accumulate capital long-term. And we don’t forgo successes or the economy just because we plan and think long-term
As head of Kreuzschwestern Europa Mitte GmbH, you’ve dedicated your daily working life to society in terms of Christian values. What synergies are there between the two functions in your opinion?
Eva Heigl: The Kreuzschwestern have been established for over 160 years. Public interest and innovation have always shaped them. The goals we pursue are sustainable and socially focused. Of course, we need to earn the money we invest in our projects. Finding the balance between the Christian value system/our non-profit status and economic efficiency is just as challenging for the order as for the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse. I, personally, find this quite exciting and, most of all, meaningful. So, for me, being able to join both institutions for part of their journey really is an interesting and rewarding task.
To conclude this interview, let us have a look at the future of the Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse. How will it develop in the next ten to twenty years? How will the tasks and mission change?
Eva Heigl: It is important that we as the owner change very little to allow Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkassen AG, as an operating company, agility in the market and let it actively shape the future. And Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse should continue to remain the stable and long-term base.
Gerhard Fabisch Steiermärkische Verwaltungssparkasse therefore fulfils a similar role to that of a foundation, which acts as a facilitator and a stabilising factor, enabling Steiermärkische Sparkasse to develop positively through the generations.
