Erste Bank Oesterreich and Sparkassen
Erste Bank Oesterreich and the 52 regional savings banks, organized in seven regional associations, offer a comprehensive network of approx. 1,000 branches in all federal states.
Erste Bank and Sparkassen report total assets of 85,4 billion Euro at the end of 2010 and 14.106 employees. 28 % of all Austrians are customers of a savings bank; the total primary funds at the end of 2010 amounted to 60,4 billion Euro, total loans were 54,4 billion Euro.
Sparkassen in Austria differ from other sectors of the banking industry by their commitment for the people in the region, by having their roots in the regional economy, particularly in the case of small and medium-sized businesses, as well as their close links with the local authorities and their high level of involvement with the professions as well as private customers, i. e. with financing residential projects. These characteristics prove themselves especially during the present financial crisis and thus set apart savings banks positively from the centralized joint-stock banks.
